Shorter hair cut... help?

I got my hair cut about 3 months ago, and when I got it cut, the hairstyle looked like this:

As you can see, it's longer in the front, then tapers up and gets shorter and more layered in the back.

Now that it's been 3 months, it's grown out about an inch or so, and it doesn't look as great as it did when it was first cut, and there's not much I can do to style it. it's still longer in the front, and shorter in the back, but the layers are uneven.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this? I'm trying to grow my hair back out, so I don't want to cut it much shorter, but I want to even out the layers and cut the front even with the back.

If anyone has any photos of hairstyles they think would be fitting, that would be so helpful.
